Children, Young People & Families

Every child and young person deserves the opportunity to feel heard, understood and supported. At Artricia Therapy, therapeutic support is tailored to the individual needs, interests, age and developmental stage of each child or young person, creating safe and creative spaces where experiences can be explored and understood.

Children and young people may seek support for a wide range of reasons, including anxiety, low confidence, emotional regulation difficulties, neurodivergence, school-based challenges, emotionally based school avoidance, hospital-related anxiety, family changes, trauma, loss, bereavement or difficulties in relationships.

Therapeutic support can help them develop greater emotional understanding, resilience and confidence in expressing themselves.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy provides opportunities for children and young people to communicate and explore their experiences through creativity when words may feel difficult. Individual Art Therapy is offered to support children and young people experiencing a range of emotional, behavioural and relational difficulties that may impact their wellbeing.

The therapeutic approach is collaborative, flexible and relationship-based, recognising that each child or young person is the expert in their own lived experience. Therapeutic goals are identified together with the child or young person and, where appropriate, their parents or carers, helping everyone to think about how Art Therapy can support positive change.

Support is available through:

  • Individual Art Therapy
  • Sibling Art Therapy
  • Family Art Therapy

Individual Art Therapy

Individual sessions provide a safe and supportive space where children and young people can explore thoughts, feelings and experiences through creativity and the therapeutic relationship.

Sessions are typically one hour in length and are usually offered in blocks of six sessions, depending on the needs of the child or young person. Therapeutic goals and progress are reviewed regularly to ensure support remains responsive and meaningful.

Where appropriate, an assessment can be undertaken as part of the therapeutic process to support understanding of a child or young person's needs and to inform collaborative working with other professionals.

Art Therapy is not usually recommended alongside another ongoing therapeutic intervention. If your child is currently receiving therapeutic support elsewhere, this can be discussed during the initial consultation.

Art Therapy for Adults

Whilst Patricia specialises in working with children, young people and families, Art Therapy may also be available for adults. Please get in touch to discuss your individual needs.

Therapeutic Life Story Work

Therapeutic Life Story Work supports children and young people to develop a coherent understanding of their personal history and experiences. This approach can be particularly helpful for children who are adopted and/or who have experienced adversity, trauma, loss, separation, care experience or significant life transitions.

Through a structured and therapeutic process, children and young people are supported to make sense of their experiences, develop emotional understanding and strengthen their sense of identity, belonging and self-worth.

As Therapeutic Life Story Work often involves exploring difficult experiences and memories, it is important that children feel emotionally safe and ready for this process. For some children and young people, a period of Art Therapy may be recommended initially to help build a trusting therapeutic relationship, develop emotional regulation skills and assess readiness for Therapeutic Life Story Work.

This ensures that support is tailored to the individual needs of the child and provided at a pace that feels safe and appropriate for them.
